• Will celebrate drums across the Caribbean
The pulsating sounds of African drumming, the ritualistic chants of a Kumina session, bodies swaying in the cool St. Ann night air and the wonderful smells of freshly brewed coffee and Jamaican chocolate filling the air are just some of the features of the annual Emancipation Jubilee celebrations at the historic Seville Heritage Park in St. Ann.
This year, the Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Emancipation Jubilee on the night of July 31, 2006. The event commemorates the emancipation of our African ancestors from slavery and focuses attention on all aspects of their lives through song, dance, drama, food, drumming and other exciting activities.
The JNHT has invited cultural groups from several Caribbean islands to celebrate with us under the theme “10th Anniversary Emancipation Jubilee – Drums Across The Caribbean.”
Emancipation Jubilee 2006 promises to be another pulsating affair. The grounds of the great house will be lit with bottle torches and the energetic Kingston Drummers will fill the air with the sounds of their drums. Popular gospel performer Sister Scully will get the crowd moving with her special brand of magic. There will also be strong cultural performances from Manchioneal Cultural Group, the exciting Stella Maris Dance Ensemble, the acclaimed Carifolk Singers and the spiritual Port Morant Kumina group from St. Thomas who will be performing their rituals through the night till daylight.
After the Proclamation at midnight the second leg of the partying will kick off with the dynamic Fab Five who will back such cultural and dynamic artistes as Tony Rebel, Queen Ifrica and George Nooks, Derrick Morgan and much more.
The Emancipation Jubilee is the coming together of traditional folk forms in honour of our ancestors. The event seeks to educate Jamaicans about various aspects of their heritage in a colourful package and relaxed atmosphere.
Traditional foods and items will be on sale. All night long patrons can enjoy strong Jamaican coffee and chocolate so they are encouraged to bring their enamel mugs. There will also be exciting giveaways for the oldest looking enamel mug and best traditional African outfit.
