Rio Bueno

Rio Bueno

Parish: Trelawny

Rio Bueno is a small town located near the border of Trelawny and St. Ann. The town was the subject of James Bartholomew Kidd's lithographic print of Rio Bueno, in 1835. It is believed that it was here that Christopher Columbus first landed, although Discovery Bay also makes claim to the honour. Rio Bueno with its fort, Fort Dundas, wharf houses, wharves and old churches reminds us of an old English village. It was here that "A High Wind in Jamaica" was filmed.

Like many seaport towns, Rio Bueno experienced economic decline. The Baptist Church located on the hill overlooking the sea is associated with William Knibb, Baptist minister and abolitionist.
